In memoriam Mermaid Camp
Funny, but you can still find Mermaid Camp in several Aqaba guidebooks. They describe it as a friendly, laid-back place for backpackers and campers, serving great food, right on the beach with excellent snorkeling locations around.
We get phone calls almost every week from people who want to book accomodation at Mermaid Camp. And we have to tell them, with broken heart, that Mermaid doesn't exist any more... ... it was demolished by bulldozers, together with the two other camps, in March 2006. This is the sad part of the story.
The good news is that Darna Village has opened in April 2009 - further to the south, opposite public Beach 4 - offering a lot more than the old camp did:
